Make a dashboard answer a real question

Make a dashboard answer a real question

Name the decision

Ask what a user should be able to decide after viewing the dashboard. A team lead reviewing pending requests needs a different view from a manager planning next month’s capacity. The decision gives the page a purpose.

Define the information

Every measure needs an agreed meaning, a source, and an owner. Record how it is calculated and when it is updated. If a source is incomplete, the interface should make that limitation visible instead of displaying an apparently precise number.

Keep the first view focused

Prioritize the information needed for the immediate task, then provide a path to details. A review with representative users can reveal whether the dashboard helps them act or simply adds another screen to check.
